Many law students are keen to gain experience of pro bono work during their time at law school. Kaplan Law School's pro bono scheme aims to provide all students with the opportunity to develop their practical legal skills whilst providing much needed legal advice and assistance.
The student pro bono committee, comprised of both GDL and LPC students, reflects the diverse student body by developing and coordinating a wide range of projects.
At the local level, projects currently include:
· Assisting Mayer Brown LLP and LawWorks with a Mediation Advice Clinic;
· Participating in Streetlaw schemes, educating groups on their legal rights and responsibilities; and
· Supporting the Welfare Benefits Specialist at a local Citizens Advice Bureau.
At the international level, students have been involved in:
· Researching and reporting to charitable organisations on current international issues, such as Disaster Relief and Criminal Procedures, to assist with their work in advising NGOs on important international legal issues; and
· Attending training sessions run by Amicus - Assisting Lawyers for Justice on Death Row - and Reprieve in order to be able to assist the work of those representing impoverished people facing execution in the United States.
We also provide support in sourcing individual student placements.
