The LPC aims at integrating legal knowledge, transactional expertise and skills. It is regulated by the Law Society and seeks three broad objectives:
- to provide knowledge, understanding and application of core legal transactions;
- to develop essential practical skills;
- to allow specialisation by introducing electives during the latter part of the course.
Compulsory subjects
After completing a short foundation course on the pervasive areas of Tax, EU Law, Conduct and Financial Services, you will study the three compulsory subjects of Business, Property and Litigation (civil and criminal), with examinations in February.
To achieve competence in the compulsory subjects, you will learn how to integrate legal knowledge, transactional expertise, and skills. For example, in handling contract based litigation, you will need to master:
- the law of Contract;
- court procedures (and tactics);
- skills such as interviewing, drafting and advocacy.
Applying this tripartite approach to each subject will be crucial to your success.

Assessment
Assessments are designed to integrate with the course as a whole. We assess each stage of the LPC’s content by assessments at the end of that stage; in February and in June. Each skill will be assessed on a pass/fail basis to establish “competence”, and each of the three compulsory and elective subjects will be assessed by examinations in which you will be able to use your own prescribed materials.
